Osteoporosis

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones become weak and fragile. This happens when the body loses too much bone or doesn’t make enough new bone. As a result, the bones can break easily, even from a minor fall, bump, or sometimes just by bending or lifting.

It is more common in older adults, especially postmenopausal women, but can affect men too.

How can I recognize it?

Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because there are usually no symptoms until a bone breaks. However, you might notice:

  • Fracturing a bone easily, especially the hip, spine, or wrist
  • Loss of height over time
  • A stooped or hunched posture
  • Back pain, especially if caused by a fractured bone in the spine
  • Bony pains like over forearms and legs
