Myositis

What is Myositis?

Myositis is a group of rare diseases that cause inflammation of the muscles. This leads to muscle weakness, especially in the shoulders, hips, neck, and thighs. Myositis can happen on its own or along with other autoimmune diseases. There are different types, like polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and inclusion body myositis.

Some forms may also affect the skin, lungs, or heart.

How can I recognize it?
  • Weakness in the upper arms and thighs – trouble climbing stairs, standing from a chair, or lifting things
  • Muscle pain or tenderness
  • Difficulty swallowing or a hoarse voice (if throat muscles are involved)
  • Skin rashes– purplish over eyelids, red rashes on knuckles, chest, or back
  • Falling or tripping more easily
  • Shortness of breath if the lungs are affected
  • Weight loss or low appetite (in some cases)

The symptoms may come on slowly or suddenly, and they can vary in severity.
