Osteoarthritis
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. It happens when the smooth cushion (called cartilage) between your bones wears down over time. This makes the bones rub against each other, causing pain. OA is more common in older adults, but it can also occur after joint injuries or with overuse.
It mostly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine.
How can I recognize it?
You might notice:
- Joint pain that gets worse with activity and better with rest
- Stiffness, especially after sitting or resting for a while
- A crackling or grinding sound when moving the joint
- Less movement in the joint over time
- Weakness or giving way of the knee or hip
- Trouble with daily tasks like walking, climbing stairs, opening jars, or writing
