Gout
What is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, very painful swelling in one or more joints. It happens when uric acid builds up in the body and forms crystals in the joints. Gout attacks can come on quickly, often at night, and usually affect one joint at a time.
How can I recognize it?
You might notice:
- Sudden, intense joint pain—often starting at night
- Redness, warmth, and swelling over the joint
- The big toe is a common spot, but it can also affect the ankle, knee, or other joints
- The pain may last a few days to a week, then go away
- You may have long gaps between attacks at first but it can become continuous later
